WHO AM I?

My name is Laia Delgado, I am 22 years old and I am in my last year of the degree of Primary Education in English at the UAB.

I wanted to be a teacher since I was a child and it's a dream for me that I'm about to become one. Being a teacher it is not an easy thing. Anyone cannot be a teacher, for this reason I would like to share the characteristics that describes me as a teacher as well as the teaching experiences and the main features of those teachers that have been more helpful in my formation and have driven me to become a teacher.

I wanted to be a teacher since I was younger, teaching is my passion and my vocation, which is a characteristic that I consider every teacher needs to have. I am a creative person, which help me to make lessons interesting and link them to life outside school. On the other hand, I consider myself a person easy to talk, if children have any problem they can come to me as I will always help them in anything they need. But, children also know when we can talk and have a laugh together and when we have to pay attention and keep order in class. Furthermore, I believe I am a hard worker person, if any of my students do not understand something, I will look for different ways or strategies to help them. I do not give up on students.

Regarding my teaching experiences, I carried out two practicums, one in a state-assisted school in Bellaterra (Ramon Fuster) and the other one in Richmond (St.Agatha’s primary catholic school). Nevertheless, in the school where I work as a lunchtime supervisor I have done several substitutions which have helped me a lot in my personal career as being able to stay alone with a group of students, having to improvise and to deal with normal class situations.

Moreover, I have been working with children for 3 years now, as a lunchtime supervisor but also in summer camps and now I am working in an english academy "Kids&us" and although this type of activities does not involve content teaching. We act as educators too, by teaching values such as respect, cooperation and group work, sharing, honesty...etc, and also helping children in their personal and social relationships, helping them to grow in terms of creativity, to gain confidence with themselves, motivating and encouraging them. For all this reasons, I have learnt a lot about being a teacher as it not just consists on teaching content but also on teaching humans.

During my life I have met a lot of teachers, and some of them have influenced me in my teaching experience. I want to talk especially about three, my music teacher in secondary school, my history teacher during baccalaureate and my school tutor during the practicum II. They have encouraged me to be a good teacher, to show my passion for it, to be active and constantly learning new things and techniques to use in class, to love children and never give up on them, to help them. There is a quote of Robert John Meehan which I would like to share: “A key to growing as teacher is to keep company mainly with teachers who uplift you, whose presence inspire you and whose passion drives you
